John Harkness Cup

John Harkness was a Past-President of both the former Brown & Chilton Candover Cricket Club and the Brown & Candover Social Club. He was a stalwart member and supporter of both organisations but he had a real passion for cricket. When cricket stopped being played at Brown Candover in 1997 he felt it was a real loss to the community. When it was decided to hold an inter-community cricket match to celebrate the Queens Golden Jubilee in 2002, John was an umpire. This match, named Upstream vs Downstream, turned out to be the seed for the rebirth of cricket in the Candover Valley. A core of individuals from the valley established Candovers Cricket Club.

In 2003, just before the start of the inaugural Candovers CC season, John Harkness died. To celebrate John's life and love of cricket, the Upstream vs Downstream fixture was played for the first time in 2003 for the John Harkness Cup. The trophy itself was originally awarded to John for the quality of the milk from the dairy herd he managed at Moth Farm. The John Harkness Cup is now played for annually and the Upstream vs Downstream match is a permanent fixture on the clubs fixture list.
